TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Police used a reverse 911 telephone alert to residents of northeastern Vigo County on Tuesday in an effort to catch two burglary suspects.
Following a manhunt during which police received tips from the public on the suspects' whereabouts, authorities arrested Carson J. Craft of Harmony on charges related to burglary and flight from police.
Participating in the search were officers from the Vigo County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana Conservation Officers, the Clay County Sheriff's Department and the Vigo County Emergency Management Agency.
The Vigo County Sheriff's Department, in a news release issued Tuesday night, stated that sheriff's deputies were called to North Stevenson Street in northern Vigo County on a report of a suspected burglary in progress about 2:30 p.m.
A resident of the area reported a suspicious car in the driveway of a relative's home.
The resident spoke with a person inside the suspect vehicle, who stated he was waiting for a friend who was inside the home. Soon a second man came out of the home and entered the suspect vehicle, which fled the scene.
The relative followed, and soon the suspect vehicle crashed on Lucas Street. Two white men exited the vehicle and fled on foot, according to the news release.
Police then established a perimeter and searched the area, including several outbuildings and a stopped train. Telephone notifications from the Vigo County Sheriff's Department were made to area residents, which resulted in a number of reported sightings of the suspects. A short time later, Craft was arrested.
Craft is facing allegations of burglary, resisting law enforcement and false informing, according to the news release.
Police have identified the second suspect and expect to seek an arrest warrant today.
