A 39-year-old High Prairie, Alta., man is in custody after an RCMP officer was attacked and his cruiser stolen in Slave Lake.

The officer was responding to a report of a single vehicle crash early Saturday.

The driver, who police believe was drunk, was seen walking away from the scene.

The suspect attacked the officer, punching him repeatedly, fighting his way to the patrol car and driving off, said police.

After the suspect was located one kilometre away, he crashed the cruiser while trying to get away.

He continued to fight with police as he was arrested, said police, who charged him with 15 offences including robbery, assaulting a police officer and failing to comply with probation.

The officer was taken to hospital with swelling, bruises and abrasions to his face.
