Feds Probe Whether Mass. Cops Ignored Brothels
Federal and state authorities who raided three day spas south of Boston that were allegedly secret brothels are probing whether cops turned a blind eye to the purported prostitution ring, the Herald has learned.
Sources said investigators are probing whether Brockton police ignored a report of prostitution from a worker at one of the day spas. A suspended state trooper is also being eyed in the probe, law enforcement sources said.
A source said investigators were at the Brockton police station yesterday.
A Brockton police spokesman did not return calls last night.
The probe stems from last week's raid on spas in Canton, Brockton and Norwood, where prosecutors say masseuses were providing sex for cash and selling drugs. The raids were done jointly by the FBI and Attorney General Martha Coakley's Office.
Spokesmen for the state police and the AG's office would not comment. Coakley spokesman Corey Welford said the case remains open and active, however.
"It's an ongoing investigation," Welford said.
Federal and state police busted the brothels after undercover cops were allegedly offered sex for money at the spas.
Prosecutors say the spas were also serving up prescription pills for willing customers.
Authorities charged the owner of the spas, 42-year-old Terry Mussari of Stoughton, and 31-year-old Tiffany Burgess.
