Three Oshweken residents are facing a number of charges in connection with the police shooting that happened in Oakville Saturday, Oct. 22.
The police pursuit and shooting resulted in a 27-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her shoulder.
Halton police released additional information about the incident Monday - a week after the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) began its investigation.
Police said the incident began at around 9 p.m. on Oct. 22, when police were called to the Oakville Entertainment Centrum, located at 2081 Winston Park Dr., in response to a vehicle theft.
In their statement to the SIU, police said the vehicle was later located on a laneway on North Service Road, near the Oakville Water Treatment Plant.
The suspect vehicle, a black SUV, was accompanied by another vehicle, which had been stolen earlier from Burlington.
Police said both vehicles attempted to flee the scene at which point officers opened fire.
One driver fled eastbound along North Service Road where the SUV collided with a police cruiser near Third Line.
Police said officers also fired shots at this location.
As the SIU investigation is underway, Halton police will not comment on why the officers opened fire.
The female passenger in the SUV received a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder. She was arrested and taken to Hamilton General Hospital for treatment.
The male driver fled the scene, but was caught a short time later.
One police officer injured his hand in the incident.
An arrest was also made in connection with the theft of the second vehicle.
Jacqueline Capton, 27, has been charged with two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle.
Charles Laforme, 25, has been charged with obstructing a police officer, flight from a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle.
Jeffry Martin, 31, has been charged with possession of burglary tools, operating a motor vehicle while disqualified, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle.
The SIU has assigned seven investigators and four forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this case.
The arm's-length agency, which investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault, has designated five of the officers involved in the incident as subject officers and five others as witness officers.
This is not the first police shooting in Oakville.
In June of 2009, a Halton Regional Police officer fired on a stolen SUV that had suddenly accelerated towards him at the Oakville Entertainment Centrum.
The vehicle missed the officer and succeeded in escaping the area.
Oshweken resident Jayme Christopher Hill, 19, was later charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in connection with that incident.
The SIU is continuing to look for witnesses to the Oct. 22 shooting and anyone who may have seen something is asked to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-1925 or 1-800-787-8529, ext. 1925.
