Oct. 26--A man accused of drunkenly crashing his rental car into an Anchorage police cruiser, causing serious injuries to himself and an officer, was released from a hospital today and taken to jail, according to police.

Gregory Fulling, 49, is scheduled to appear in court on assault and drunken-driving charges Thursday afternoon for the Sept. 23 crash. The wreck fractured Fulling's skull and left Officer Randy Hughes with a broken pelvis and broken foot, police said.

According to court records, Hughes filed a personal injury lawsuit against Fulling on Tuesday.

Hughes was sent to a Seattle hospital for treatment and returned home to Anchorage about two weeks after the crash. Fulling, a resident of Marysville, Wash., was arrested Tuesday at an Anchorage extended-care medical facility.

The nearly head-on collision came during the early morning hours as Fulling drove the wrong way on the Glenn Highway from downtown Anchorage to near Eagle River. There, his rented Chrysler sedan struck Hughes' Chevy Impala patrol car, according to charging documents filed in court.

Fulling's blood-alcohol content later tested at more than twice the legal limit, the court papers say.
