HOUSTON

While serving a warrant in a narcotics investigation at a home in east Houston Monday, police officers discovered something much bigger -- 18 people being held hostage in an alleged human smuggling operation.

Houston Police said four suspects were holding more than a dozen illegal immigrants at a home near Avenue K and 1st Street. The victims included an 8-year-old girl who was seen clutching a blanket as she was taken away in a police unit.

HPD said many of the suspects tried to make a run for it, including one woman who fell and got hurt while jumping from rooftop to rooftop.

Immigration officials said they are processing all of the victims and will continue to investigate the situation.
