Fiery Crash Kills Five on Michigan Freeway

A crash Sunday morning on the Lodge Freeway is under investigation after five people were killed.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. --

A crash Sunday morning on the Lodge Freeway is under investigation after five people were killed.

The two-car crash happened at about 4:15 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the freeway near Telegraph Road. The crash closed the Lodge for more than five hours.

According to Michigan State Police, five people were killed in the accident. Flames fully engulfed an Accura SUV with four unidentified people inside. A lone driver may have been traveling the wrong direction, which resulted in the collision.

Pam Herdman witnessed the crash and said the flames were the size of a nearby guardrail.

There were reports of a wrong-way driver just minutes before the crash happened, police said.

The crash was so strong that the vehicle spun around and ultimately ended up in the opposite direction in which they were originally traveling.

Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
