HAMPTON, Va. -- One person was shot during a robbery this morning at the Food Lion at 143 Newmarket Square near the city line.
About 7:22 a.m., two people walked into the store and announced the robbery, said Cpl. Jason Price, police spokesman. The robbers put devices on employees and told them they were bombs.
They also announced that they were FBI agents, Price said. One of the robbers wore a shirt with "FBI" on the front and the other wore a badge and gun on his belt.
As the robbers proceeded farther into the business, they encountered a vendor and fired at him, Price said. The vendor stabbed one of the suspects in the upper torso.
The robbers then fled the store. There were two employees, six customers and the one vendor inside the store during the robbery, Price said.
The vendor, who was shot in the leg, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
The Newport News bomb squad determined that the devices were not bombs, Price said.
Police said the suspects were wearing all black.
