A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was airlifted to a San Francisco Bay Area trauma center after his vehicle crashed on Laureles Grade Road on Friday afternoon.

CHP spokesman officer Robert Lehman said the officer, whose name was not released, was northbound from Carmel Valley with another motorcycle officer when the crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m.

Traffic was knotted on Monterey-Salinas Highway and Laureles Grade for a while as emergency crews responded.

The BMW motorcycle crashed for an unknown reason while the officers were going down a steep portion of the road, Lehman said. The motorcycle didn't collide with another vehicle.

Officers at the scene said the victim's injuries didn't appear life-threatening, Lehman said. Because the victim lost consciousness at the scene, he was taken to a trauma center as a precaution, he said.

The injured officer has been with the CHP for several years and has been a motorcycle officer for a few months, Lehman said.
