The Lynwood police officer wrongly charged last year as being the honeybee killer who left one dead and two injured is taking his accusers to court.
Brian Dorian, 38, filed a lawsuit Thursday in federal court naming Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas, State's Attorney James Glasgow and sheriff's Detective Dean Morelli.
The lawsuit asks a judge to hold Will County liable for more than $1 million in damages on false arrest, false imprisonment, conspiracy, malicious prosecution and due process claims. Dorian's attorneys could not immediately be reached for comment.
Dorian was arrested in 2010 for the murder of a Hammond, Ind., worker who was shot while rehabbing a Beecher-area home. Prosecutors dropped the charges four days after filing them.
Authorities later said Gary Amaya, who was killed with his own gun while robbing an Orland Park tanning salon, was the killer who asked about honeybees before opening fire.
A Kaupas spokesman declined comment. Glasgow's office released a statement Thursday saying their investigation was "conducted according to the letter of the law" and that the defendants in the lawsuit would be "justified" in court.
"I feel horrible that Brian Dorian went through this," Glasgow said when charges were dropped last year. "I certainly would apologize for any inconvenience he has suffered. But at the same time, he is a police officer, and if he were in our shoes ... Brian Dorian would have acted the same way."
