HOUSTON
At a party in southwest Houston late Thursday night, a Texas Southern University student said two police officers violently attacked him, according to his attorney.
Jabbar Perkins, 21, was at a friend's apartment at the Villas at Coronado when a girl slapped him, according to his attorney George Parnham. Afterward, Perkins and his two friends decided to leave.
"As they came down the stairs there were two men standing at the base of the stairs," Parnham said. "They have words with Jabbar and the other two and after words were had, these two drew firearms."
Parnham said he thinks the two men were off-duty Houston Police officers who ordered Perkins and his friends to go away. He said the men in plain-clothes never identified themselves as officers.
"[Perkins] was beaten, went to the ground, he was hit with a pistol, more occasions than one," the attorney said. "His eyes were pepper-sprayed."
Houston Police said Perkins aggressively came at the off-duty officers and that he was combative, throwing elbows and doing everything he could to stay out of handcuffs. He was taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest.
After he was released from jail, Perkins went to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with a concussion, eye damage and brain injuries, according to his lawyer.
Parnham said his client had "brain bruising and swelling, that was a blow to the skull, a few blows to the head."
In a picture taken early Friday morning, it appears Perkins is crying tears of blood.
"It's almost grotesque," Parnham said of the attack. "This shouldn't have happened to anybody."
Houston Police said anyone who feels like a police officer treated them unfairly should file a complaint with the department.
Perkins has a court date set for Friday on his charges.
