Sept. 30--Fired Milwaukee police officer Ladmarald Cates, charged with raping a woman after he responded to her 911 call in July, pleaded not guilty to two felonies Friday in federal court in Milwaukee.
The charges include violating the woman's civil rights while acting under the color of law and using a firearm in the commission of an act of violence, according to the indictment. If convicted, Cates faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison.
U.S. Magistrate Judge William Callahan allowed Cates to remain free on his own recognizance pending trial. A trial date has not yet been set. Callahan also ordered Cates not to have any contact with the victim or any of the witnesses in the case.
