DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. --
A Douglas County sheriff's deputy and his family are devastated after a fire this week.
It was another big blow for Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Shipp. He was injured on the job several months ago.
“Emotionally, he’s not well at all. He’s already been through so much this year. Our family's been through so much,” Shipp’s wife, Christine, told Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge.
The Tuesday fire destroyed the inside of the Lithia Springs home they were leasing to buy. The family lost almost everything.
During January’s ice storm, Shipp fell while directing traffic. He suffered a severe concussion, memory loss and has a slipped disc in his back. He has not been to work since then.
The family has been living on Shipp’s disability, which is two-thirds of his normal pay. A representative for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Shipp is an award-winning DUI specialist.
“Jeff is also one of these guys who's right now supporting one of his grandchildren. He has a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old. At this time in his life, I feel for him just for that,” Chief Deputy Stan Copeland said.
There are a few toys left in the backyard but most of the grandchildren's toys were destroyed in the fire. The Sheriff's Office has been collecting toys and clothing for them. They are also collecting toiletries and gift cards.
“It was very overwhelming. We are very, very touched by it,” Christine Shipp said.
Donations for the Shipp family can be made to a bank account under Christina Shipp’s name, available at Suntrust Bank.
