An alleged thief caught red-handed, swallows a stolen diamond ring.

Wilfredo Gonzalez-Cruz, 30, is charged with one count of felony theft. A judge set bond at $10,000.

On Friday, he was doing repair work at Daniel and Myra Bustos' home on Central Avenue in west suburban Cicero. Police say he asked to use the restroom. When he came out, Myra noticed her diamond ring was gone.

The couple confronted Gonzalez-Cruz. He denied any wrongdoing, but they say he later pulled the ring out of his shoe and put it into his mouth. After a short struggle, he swallowed it. Officers arriving at the home say he confessed to everything.

Gonzalez-Cruz was taken to McNeal Hospital, where an x-ray showed the ring in his stomach, according to police.

He was given medication and was locked up at the Cicero Police Department in a special rubber room with bed pans.

It took 2 days for him to expel the diamond ring, valued at $1600.
