San Bernardino police officers found a huge drug cache in a Westside home where a man was arrested Monday after a neighbor reported he fired a gun while standing in his front yard.
Frank Javier Cardona, 33, was taken into custody after a 45-minute standoff at the house in the 1200 block of King Street, police said.
About 10 p.m., officers who were searching the house discovered 76 pounds of black-tar heroin packaged for sale, said San Bernardino police spokeswoman Lt. Gwendolyn Waters. Narcotics investigators estimated the street value at $3 million.
The drug seizure is a record haul for the San Bernardino Police Department, Waters said in the news release.
Officers also found several ounces of methamphetamine and the handgun Cardona is suspected of firing, she said.
Cardona was arrested soon after gang and SWAT officers arrived. He had barricaded himself in the house with a woman for a time, but police talked him and the woman into coming out.
The woman was questioned and released Monday but police arrested her Tuesday on drug charges as well, Waters said. She is identified as Dulce Judith Valdez-Quintero, 30, of Tijuana.
Both suspects are being held at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino and face charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, and possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, police said.
Cardona had previously been charged with willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence.
Cardona's bail was set at $2,050,000, while Valdez-Quintero's was set at $50,000, jail records indicate.
Police were not available Tuesday night for comment.
