A New York man accused of hitting an on-duty police officer with his car this month is now facing a murder charge.
Saddam Hussein Mohsin, 30, of Buffalo is being charged with first-degree murder in the death of Officer Charles Armour, 40, who died June 11, a week after being hit while on foot patrol in Greektown, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Mohsin, according to the Prosecutor's Office, also is charged with murder of a peace correction officer, failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death and reckless driving causing death.
He is expected to be arraigned on the amended charges today.
If convicted, Mohsin faces life in prison.
Before Armour died, Mohsin was facing a charge of assault with intent to commit murder.
"The loss of this dedicated officer is a profound loss to the community," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Monday in a news release. "Our hearts go out to the family of Officer Armour."
Police have said Mohsin was obstructing a moving lane of traffic in the area of St. Antoine and Monroe about 12:20 a.m. June 5.
When Armour attempted to get him to move, Mohsin struck him with his vehicle, police said. Authorities have said Mohsin was traveling in the wrong direction.
The preliminary examination has been adjourned to Aug. 22 because Mohsin's attorney has requested his client be examined for competency and criminal responsibility, according to the prosecutor's office.
