EAST HANOVER, Pa. --
State police said a trooper was injured while investigating a roadside fire Friday night around 7 p.m.
The 28-year-old trooper, who name was not released, stopped on Route 81 at the scene of a smoldering pile of items on the side of the road, troopers said.
As the trooper approached the pile, he inhaled fumes, making it difficult for him to make it back to his vehicle. He requested assistance and was taken to Hershey Medical Center.
He suffered apparent burns to his throat and lungs and was listed in guarded condition as of Friday evening.
Police said three men were scene unloading 5-gallon buckets on the side of the road.
A State Police Clandestine Laboratory Team and chemist from the State Police Regional Laboratory arrived on scene and determined the items were not associated with drug manufacturing. It is not known what toxic fumes were inhaled by the trooper.
Police are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the dumping to call police at (717) 671-7500.
Route 81 was closed for more than four hours while police investigated the scene.
