A man convicted of killing a Georgetown police officer in 2009 was sentenced to death on Friday, according to The News Journal.
Judge T. Henley Graves handed down the sentence to Derrick Powell in front of a packed Sussex County courtroom.
Powell was found guilty in February of fatally shooting Officer Chad Spicer on Sept. 1, 2009.
Spicer and his partner were in their cruiser chasing Powell and two other men after responding to a report of shots fired at McDonald's.
A jury voted 7-5 in favor of the death penalty and his defenders argued that the split verdict barred the judge from imposing a death sentence, the report stated.
