    GREENVILLE, S.C. --

A Greenville man is accused of punching a police officer in the face.

Greenville police said they were called to the Waffle House on Haywood Road for an assault in progress.

Police said when they arrived, two men, later identified as Roger Conner and Jesse Rackley, were on top of Cameron Swayngham. Police said Rackley had his hands on Swayngham’s upper body close to his neck and appeared to be holding him down. Conner appeared to be striking Swayngham’s in the face, police said.

Police said they broke up the fight and ordered all the men to the ground. Police said as they were doing this, Swayngham hit one of the officers in the back of the head with a closed fist and the officer fell to the ground. Police said Swayngham then sat on top of the officer and began hitting him in the face with a closed fist. Police called for backup and got Swayngham off of the officer.

Police said Swayngham continued to strike the officer until another officer hit Swayngham in the face and head several times while trying to arrest him. Police said Swayngham did not comply with the commands to quit resisting. Police said after more of a struggle Swayngham was put in handcuffs and arrested.

Swayngham was checked by EMS, but police said he didn’t need to be transported to the hospital. Police said after being checked, Swayngham started yelling profane language.

They said he also was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol. The officer told Swayngham to get back in the vehicle and he replied with profane language. Swayngham was then taken to the Greenville County Detention Center.

At the detention center, police said, Swayngham would not comply during a search. Officers said he spat blood on an office’s shoe during the search.

According to an incident report, Swayngham was charged with assault on a police officer while resisting arrest, assault and battery and public intoxication.

The two other men involved, Roger Conner and Jesse Rackley, were both charged with assault and battery.
