Conn. State Police Charge Driver In Seafood Crash

    April 22, 2011
The driver of a tractor-trailer who lost control Thursday morning on Route 15, spilling shrimp and yellow fin tuna along the highway and causing major delays, was driving with a suspended license.

    EAST HARTFORD, Conn --

The driver of a tractor-trailer who lost control Thursday morning on Route 15, spilling shrimp and yellow fin tuna along the highway and causing major delays, was driving with a suspended license.

State police charged Dane Hemphil, 36, with operating a vehicle under suspension. He was ordered not to operate a motor vehicle anywhere until he has a valid Connecticut license.

Hemphill, who served 12 years in Baltimore on a first-degree murder charge, was cited in 2009 for failing to stop at a weigh station in Greenwich, according to court records. He was released on a $4,000 bond.

The crash caused closures for motorists going over the Charter Oak Bridge on the Hartford-East Hartford line, as well as traffic traveling westbound on Interstate 84.

Crews spent the early part of the morning cleaning a southbound lane so they could reopen exit 15 to motorists heading into Hartford.

Then they cleared the crash and the northbound lanes of 15, which connects Interstate 91 to 84 West.
