COCONIO COUNTY, Arizona -- A Coconino County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit deputy seized more than 17 pounds of suspected fentanyl during a traffic stop on Interstate 17 earlier this month, according to the agency.
The stop occurred Jan. 9, 2026, at approximately 9:52 a.m. near the Kelly Canyon exit after deputies identified a traffic violation. During the stop, the deputy received consent to search the vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 17.58 pounds of suspected fentanyl, estimated at approximately 70,000 pills.
The driver, identified as Angel Salgado-Chavez, 36, was arrested and booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility. He was charged with transportation of narcotic drugs for sale.
According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
