Back Safety for First Responders

First responders emergency, law enforcement and firefighting personnel - are at especially high risk for back injuries due to the nature of their work. To help avoid back injuries on the job, Coastal Training Technologies Corp. has produced "Back Safety for First Responders." This new video training program gives an overview of back basics by teaching the viewer about how the vertebrae, discs and muscles work. The warning signs of back injury are discussed and methods for protecting the back are taught. Specifically noted are the most common ways first responders sustain back injuries. For instance, EMTs commonly injure their backs while moving patients on long spine boards or carrying large medic boxes. Hazmat team members may incur back injuries while ascending ladders carrying heavy loads, and firefighters commonly injure their backs putting on and taking off self-contained breathing apparatus. Instructions are given on proper lifting and handling of heavy items in order to avoid back injuries. Recommended exercises to protect the back from harm are described. "Back Safety for First Responders" is available as a video program accompanied by 10 employee handbooks.
