Biometric Reader Receives FIPS 201 Approval

Sept. 19, 2007
The Be.U MobileTM now appears on the GSA FIPS 201 Evaluation Program Approved Product List

QUEBEC CITY, QC, September 11th, 2007 -- Labcal Technologies Inc., a Canadian company specializing in robust mobile biometric solutions for identification and authentication, is proud to announce that the Be.U Mobile, the company's rugged handheld biometric device, received the FIPS 201 approval through the General Services Administration (GSA)'s FIPS 201 evaluation program. Labcal's reader appears in the CHUID card reader category.

The Federal Information Processing Standards Publication (FIPS) 201 is a United States federal government standard that specifies Personal Identity Verification (PIV) requirements for federal employees and contractors. Appearing on the GSA's approved list confirms that Labcal's device can be purchased by any federal agencies for personal identity verification of federal employees. Only products that have completed the rigorous government testing procedures are featured on the approved product list. All the details about GSA's FIPS 201 Evaluation Program can be found at http://fips201ep.cio.gov/. The FIPS 201 Evaluation Program Approved Product List appears at http://fips201ep.cio.gov/apl.php.

"Appearing on the GSA's FIPS 201 list is another confirmation that Labcal's Be.U Mobile can meet the higher requirements and the identification and authentication market," said Pierre Root, President and CEO of Labcal. "We are also proud to announce that Labcal will be delivering its 1000th Be.U Mobile unit for a National ID Card Project in an unnamed Middle Eastern country."

Lowry Computer Products, Inc., headquartered in Brighton, MI, is the Master Distributor of the Be.U Mobile in the United States. "Making the GSA's FIPS 201 list is a very important milestone," said Steve Lowry, Executive Vice President of Lowry. "Now federal, state, and local authorities have the ability to purchase the device."

By combining a fingerprint reader with contact and contactless smart card readers, the Be.U Mobile SMC-800 series is the ideal rugged handheld device to authenticate ID documents and identify people, wherever they may be. With its smart card interfaces compliant with many industry standards such as ISO and now FIPS, the Be.U Mobile is the perfect device to identify people and authenticate their e-Passports, employee IDs (such as the Transport Workers Identification Credential (TWIC), the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card, the Common Access Card (CAC), the Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)) and driver's licenses. The device also has embedded camera and imager options for photo capture and reading bar code (1D, 2D, etc) as well as Wi-Fi, GSM and CDMA wireless communication options. Designed to meet several IP and MIL specifications and ratings to resist such things as water, sand, drops, and extreme temperatures the Be.U Mobile is arguably the only real rugged handheld device that is conceived and developed, from the start, for the biometric ID verification and identification market.
