Wounded Fla. Sheriff's Deputy Hailed as Hero

Feb. 7, 2014
Taylor County Deputy Robert Lundy was shot by a gunman less than five feet away at a car dealership.

The wife of a Taylor County, Fla. Sheriff's Deputy hasn't spoke to him since before he was shot, and doctors say she'll have to wait between 24 and 48 before she can.

Deputy Robert Lundy is currently hooked up to a breathing tube and is in a medically induced coma at Doctors' Memorial Hospital in Perry, according to The Tallahassee Democrat.

The 32-year-old deputy shot and killed an employee at the Timberland Ford dealership who crashed through the front of the store before he opened fire.

Lundy, who was having his patrol car serviced at the dealership, and two other employees, were wounded by 51-year-old Earl Edward Clague Jr.

The 10-year veteran of the department was shot in the abdomen at less than five feet away, causing shotgun pellets to hit his liver, colon and lower intestine.

His wife, Kelly, said that he hadn't been wearing his bulletproof vest because of back problems, and wasn't wearing one at the time of the shooting.

"He knew that he did not have one," she told the newspaper. "He was brave enough to stand up and do that."

Lundy is being hailed as a hero who saved lives with his actions.

"Everyone’s calling him a hero and I've always known that," Kelly said. "I'm just grateful that he is going to survive this and get to know how much he is loved, and what he had done, and the lives he has impacted.”

Officials with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is investigating the case, expect Lundy and the wounded employees to survive.
