An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and wounded a robbery suspect at a Walgreens store in the Jefferson Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, according to authorities.
The shooting happened around 11 a.m. Monday in the 5200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, authorities said.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Patrick Camden, citing preliminary information, said an off-duty police officer walked into the Walgreens to get money from an ATM machine while his wife waited in their vehicle outside.
The officer noticed a heavy-set man behind the counter pulling money out of the cash register and stuffing it into a bag, Camden said. The off-duty officer announced that he was a police officer and then spotted a gun in the man's pocket, Camden said.
"As our officer's going toward him, our guy starts going into his pocket to get the gun. At that point the officer fires a shot. Bad guy is shot in the shoulder," Camden said.
The suspect, described as weighing more than 300 pounds, fits the description of a robber who robbed the same store last week and a nearby Dollar Tree store recently, as well as a Dunkin Donuts near Belmont and Austin avenues, police said.
The suspect was taken in good condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Camden said. His wound was not considered life-threatening, he said.
The shooting occurred down the street from the Jefferson Park District police station.
