GARDEN CITY, Kan. -- A Haskell County Sheriff's deputy injured in a two-vehicle accident while responding Saturday to a call is in good condition at a Garden City hospital, a hospital spokesman confirmed.
Deputy Gary Johnson Jr., 26, of Arkansas City was listed in good condition late Sunday at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. Responding to an emergency at the Haskell/Grant county line shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, he was speeding westbound on U.S. 160 when a 2012 GMC Denali driven by 28-year-old Nicholas York of Sublette, who was eastbound on the highway, attempted to turn left onto Haskell County Road JJ.
Johnson tried to avoid York's vehicle, but the two collided nearly head-on, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported. York, 28-year-old Julie York and 8-month-old Mackenzie York were taken to the hospital for possible injuries but have since been released. All were wearing seat belts.
