Shot San Antonio Police Officer Fighting for Life

Officer Robert Deckard was wounded Sunday during a high-speed pursuit with armed-robbery suspects.

A San Antonio police officer was shot in the head early Sunday morning and is fighting for his life in a hospital.

Officer Robert Deckard suffered the gunshot wound during a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 37 with armed-robbery suspects around 2 a.m., according to The San Antonio Express-News.

The suspects began shooting from their vehicle, striking the officer and causing him to crash.

The officer was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where doctors were unable to remove the bullet that traveled through his forehead and lodged in his brain.

Police Chief William McManus told the newspaper that doctors were not optimistic that the six-year veteran would survive.

The suspects -- Shawn Ruiz Puente and Jeneieve Ramos -- were taken into custody in Wilson County after they were tracked down by a police dog in the woods around 8 a.m..

Police said the two men were suspected of committing a string of 15 armed robberies in recent days, with six occurring Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Both suspects are expected to be officially charged Monday.

The incident is currently under investigation.
