FORT WORTH, Texas -- A man who went outside to check on his own dog was mauled by two pit bulls and a police officer had to shoot the animals to stop the attack, Fort Worth police said.

The incident occurred about 12:15 a.m. in the 3300 block of North Crump Street, north of the Fort Worth Stockyards and south of Meacham Airport.

Police received a call that the dogs were attacking a man and that the caller was afraid the dogs were going to kill him.

The man went outside when he heard noise in the side yard of his home. He found his dog was being attacked by two pit bulls. The two dogs then attacked the man. His daughter also was injured when she tried to help her father, according to a police report.

When officers arrived, they shot the two pit bulls, which were pronounced dead at the scene.

The father and daughter were transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital with "serious bites" but the injuries were not considered life-threatening, said Matt Zavadsky, a MedStar spokesman. The father had a number of bites.

"He had many bite marks on his face, on his arm -- his right arm -- and also his legs," Capt. Kevin Rodricks with the Fort Worth Police Department told KTVT/Channel 11.

His dog escaped during the attack and has not been found.
