Weekend (Oct. 11-13)

A man accused of shooting a New Hanover County, N.C. Sheriff's detective was killed by officers Sunday afternoon.

Brandon Devone Smith fatally wounded following a car chase and a foot pursuit that ended in a wooded area. Authorities said the 30-year-old shot Detective Michael Spencer near a public housing development on Oct. 10.

Police in Missouri were busy on a manhunt of their own early Friday after two Jefferson County deputies were shot and wounded.

The suspect, identified as Shawn Keith Nims, jumped out a window of a nearby home and was shot dead by police six hours after opening fire on Deputies Nina Oisa and Michael Toombs.

The Chicago Marathon went off without a hitch on Sunday amid tighter security following the deadly Boston Marathon bombings earlier this year.

Police and event organizers instituted new safety measures following April's tragedy, but the character of the race remained unchanged.

Police in Bellingham, Wash. used pepper spray to disperse hundreds of rioting college students Saturday night near Western Washington University.

Officials said the students threw glass bottles, dishes, cinder blocks, lawn chairs and cans at police officers and their cruisers.

Monday (Oct.14)

An arrest in one of New York City's most notorious cold cases brought a sense of relief to the investigators who worked the case.

Conrado Juarez was charged in the 1991 "Baby Hope" slaying in which a 4-year-old girl's body was found stuffed in a picnic cooler along a highway.

Law enforcement members are criticizing the decision by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to charge an officer with voluntary manslaughter.

Randall Kerrick was arrested in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man just hours after the incident while most police agencies usually take weeks and sometimes months to complete similar investigations.

A Boston police officer became an overnight sensation after his celebration during a Red Sox game went viral.

Tuesday (Oct. 15)

The Cleveland Police Department suspended 63 officers following a review of a pursuit that left two people dead late last year.

Police Chief Michael McGrath said the suspensions were the result of disciplinary hearings, which found the officers violated orders and department rules during the incident that ended in the firing of 137 shots.

Two Memphis police officers were shot during a standoff as they attempted to arrest a man later found dead in the home that was engulfed by flames.

Officers Timothy Jackson and Paul Hutchinson were wounded by Aaron Dumas as they confronted the man who was wanted on attempted murder charges.

An Aurora, Colo. police officer who responded to a deadly theater shooting testified that suspected gunman James Holmes gave him a "a self-satisfying offensive smirk."

Officer Justin Grizzle recalled the night of July 20, 2012 during a pretrial hearing over Holmes' statements to police before he was read his Miranda rights.

Parole was denied for a man convicted in the 1992 slaying of a John Day, Ore. police officer.

The Oregon Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision deferred the release of Sidney Dean Porter, who is serving life in prison for killing Officer Frank L. Ward.

Wednesday (Oct. 16)

An Austin, Texas lieutenant was killed in a two-vehicle wreck while driving to work.

Lt. Clay Crabb lost control of the black unmarked police cruiser in the rain, causing the vehicle to hydroplane and veer into oncoming traffic.

The Supreme Court appeared skeptical of a Kansas court decision that overturned the conviction and death sentence of a man who admitted killing Greenwood County's sheriff.

Justices are debating whether to uphold a Kansas Supreme Court decision that threw out the conviction of Scott Cheever in the 2005 fatal shooting of Sheriff Matt Samuels.

A baggage handler was arrested following the investigation into two dry ice explosions at the Los Angeles International Airport.

Dicarlo Bennett was charged with the possession of a destructive device near an aircraft that led police to step up patrols and increased its checks on employees.

A New York police department is facing opposition for enforcing the state's new gun law.

Lockport police officers charged a man who was a passenger during a traffic stop when he turned over a loaded semiautomatic handgun in a holster from the glove compartment. The gun was legal, but police say that under the NY SAFE Act, the 10 rounds of 9 mm ammunition found in the magazine were not.

Thursday (Oct. 17)

Stalker Radar recently completed the first successful field trail using Google Glass by law enforcement officials.

The company -- which released the in-car video and officer location system CopTrax earlier this year -- plans to show the technology at its booth during the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Philadelphia next week.

Two convicted murderers serving life sentences in a Florida prison were recently released after officials were duped by forged court documents.

The release of Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker from the Franklin Correctional Institution has led to a manhunt across Central Florida.

The Justice Department is appealing a judge's decision to order a new trial for five former New Orleans police officers.

The officers were previously convicted of civil rights violations during deadly shootings on a bridge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Friday (Oct. 18)

Six people were killed and an Upper Arlington, Ohio police officer was injured in a crash between a vehicle and a cruiser.

Officials say the officer was responding to a robbery report with his lights and siren activated when the crash occurred at an intersection.

There are growing concerns after reports of the flesh-rotting drug Krokodil in the U.S.

So far, the drug has been reported in Arizona, Utah and Illinois, but DEA officials have said that none of the cases have been confirmed.

The historic Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia holds it's "Terror Behind the Walls" scarefest each year and is one of the city's most unusual tourist sites.

Organizers bill the even as the nation's largest haunted house outside an amusement park and say that people travel from all over the country to visit the prison.
