A locksmith came to the rescue Friday morning to free four teenagers who were trapped for several hours inside a walk-in vault at a building in the Chautauqua County Town of Ellicott.
The initial call about the situation was made to Jamestown police at about 1 a.m., from someone who was aware the teens -- ages 18 and 19 -- were stuck inside the vault at 19 N. Work St. in Falconer. The building formerly housed a law office.
The teens had permission to be inside the building, noted Ellicott Police Chief Bill Ohnmeiss.
Those who responded to the call included Jamestown firefighters, Chautauqua County's Technical Rescue Team -- and a locksmith.
After about four hours, the locksmith was able to open the door to the vault. The teens were taken to WCA Hospital in Jamestown to be examined, the police chief said.
Authorities found a large quantity of alcohol and a small amount of marijuana on the premises, Ohnmeiss said. Charges are pending against the teens, whose names weren't released.
