Oct. 21--Eight people were taken to area hospitals, four of them seriously injured, following a vehicle crash in the Little Village neighborhood this afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the crash at 31st and Rockwell streets at 2:43 p.m., said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Joe Roccasalva. Fire officials called an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 for the crash, sending at least six ambulances to the scene.
Fire Department paramedics took a child and an adult in serious-to-critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital; two adults in serious-to-critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital; and four adults in good-to-fair condition to St. Anthony Hospital, Roccasalva said.
Three of the people who were injured were Cook County Sheriff's correctional officers who were driving in the same vehicle on their way to their job at the Cook County Jail, said Frank Bilecki, a Sheriff's spokesman.
The officers work at Division 11, which is near the accident site, Bilecki said. One of the officers was undergoing surgery for a broken leg, and the two other officers have already been released, Bilecki said. The people in the other car have also been released from hospitals, Bilecki said.
