For the second time in less than six months, a New Castle police dog has died.
Achill, a 7-year-old German shepherd, died of cancer Sunday, police Chief Tom Sansone said. Achill had been with the department for 4 1/2 years under handler Sgt. John Colella.
Chico, a 6-year-old Dutch shepherd, died of heat stroke June 4 after his handler, Officer James C. Hoyland, left him alone for four hours in a police cruiser. Hoyland served a 30-day unpaid suspension. Sansone said the Lawrence County District Attorney's office will determine if criminal charges are warranted.
The District Attorney's office did not return calls.
The police department now has two police dogs. Sansone said the city plans to replace Achill and Chico.
