A 42-year-old man was arrested with the help of a police dog after an attempted burglary in south Wichita late Wednesday night, authorities said.

The incident unfolded shortly after 11:30 p.m. when a man called 911 to report someone was trying to break into his house in the 1600 block of South Millwood, south of Kellogg and Seneca, Lt. Doug Nolte said. The caller said someone was trying to enter his house through a window on the side of his house.

The burglary attempt ended when the would-be intruder realized someone was home, Nolte said, and the resident was able to give a description of a car that pulled out of his driveway. An officer spotted the car near Dora and Euclid and attempted to pull it over. The driver sped up, however, and a short chase ensued.

Other officers responding to the report laid spikes on the street and the fleeing driver struck one set and spun out when trying to avoid another, Nolte said. The driver bailed from the car and ran into the residential area.

He was found in the backyard of a house a short time later by a K-9 unit. When he refused commands to surrender, Nolte said, the suspect was apprehended by the police dog.

After he was treated at a local hospital for dog bites to his arm and leg, the suspect was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. A second man who was in the car was questioned by police, Nolte said.
