Two N.C. Troopers Crash During Pursuit
Nov. 16--Two state troopers escaped injury overnight when they lost control of their patrol cars while trying to catch a man in northeast Charlotte.
The series of events started shortly after 1:30 a.m., when one of the troopers stopped a man driving a grey-colored SUV on northbound Interstate 85 near Sugar Creek Road. Troopers say the man emerged from his vehicle but began wrestling with the trooper.
The trooper fired his stun gun, but it malfunctioned. The man then jumped in his vehicle and drove off, headed toward the 29/49 Connector off I-85.
The trooper had called for help, and another trooper responding to the scene lost control of his vehicle on Sugar Creek Road. The pursuing trooper then lost control of his vehicle on Mineral Springs Road, as the pursuit went off I-85.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police stopped a driver soon afterward, but State Highway Patrol Spokesman Trooper Mark Helms said investigators determined that man had not been involved in the chase.
