Nov. 16--TAMPA -- A man called 911 Tuesday afternoon and said he was heading to the Tampa Police Department's District III office with a body in his car trunk.
When the man arrived at 3808 N. 22nd St., a police officer was waiting for him in the parking lot, said police spokeswoman Andrea Davis.
The officer opened the trunk of the gold Mercury Grand Marquis and found the body of a man who had been dead for more than a day, Davis said.
Detectives detained the driver for questioning, Davis said. His name was not released.
Police on Tuesday night were working to get a search warrant to remove the body from the trunk and search the vehicle, Davis said.
Once the body is removed, the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy and determine the cause of death, Davis said.
"That will determine whether or not we have a homicide or some other type of death," Davis said. "It's very early on in the investigation, and there are a lot of questions that we have that we don't have answers to at this point."
Officers on the scene were shocked that someone would drive to a police station with a body in the trunk, Davis said.
"This is something you'd see on an episode of 'CSI' or something in a movie," Davis said. "It's not something you'd expect in real life."
