NORTHUMBERLAND -- Borough police and the Northumberland County district attorney are investigating possible criminal wrongdoing by a man reportedly armed with guns who barricaded himself in an apartment at 567 Priestley Ave. on Saturday night.

Police on Sunday said the man was taken into custody and taken to an area hospital for medical evaluation. His name still was not released. No one was injured, Chief Tim Fink said.

District Attorney Anthony Rosini had no comment Sunday night and referred questions to the police department.

Five police agencies and a regional SWAT team responded to the apartment building at 6:38 p.m. after receiving a call about an armed man being barricaded in an apartment.

People living near the apartment building were evacuated by police. After police were in the area for about an hour, the residents were told to find shelter elsewhere for the night. The number of affected residents was not available Sunday.

Several people at the scene who said they were relatives or friends of the man said his name was Steve, but didn't give his last name. One man said Steve was having issues, but wouldn't elaborate.

Four blocks of Priestley Avenue, from King to Hanover streets, were closed by Northumberland and Point Township fire police. Water and Orange streets also were closed during the incident.

Responding to the call were police from Milton, Northumberland, Point Township, Sunbury and the state police. The SWAT team was from the Susquehanna Valley.
