Nov. 14--WEST HAVEN -- A veteran West Haven police officer was injured early Saturday after he was struck by a drunken driver whose blood alcohol content was about three times the legal limit, police said.
Elgio Ramirez-Aguilar, 27, of 264 Blatchley Ave., in New Haven, faces numerous charges in the crash.
West Haven police have not identified the officer. The officer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
The officer was on patrol on Boston Post Road near Peabody Street at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday when a vehicle exiting 857 Boston Post Road struck his car. That driver had a blinking red light at the time of the crash, police said. A source said the driver had been at Utopia Cafe, at that Boston Post Road address.
The driver was charged with DUI, failure to grant right of way at an intersection, operating a motor vehicle with no license, and failure to insure his motor vehicle, police said.
The accident marked the second time in three days that an officer was hurt in a crash. Thursday morning, Officer Vincent Costanzo was hospitalized after he was hit by a CT Transit Bus as he exited his patrol SUV. There have been no charges in that accident, police said.
Updates will follow.
