Lexington police have charged a man with shooting two people, including a University of Kentucky student, outside a popular Lexington night club early Friday.
Demetrius "Demetrics" L. Flynn is charged with two counts of first-degree assault in the shooting of Jerrad Grider, 25, and Brooks D. Richardson, 19, who were shot while standing on the sidewalk outside Silks Lounge, 125 North Mill Street, Lt. James Curless said.
Flynn pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday afternoon.
Police said Flynn opened fire into the crowd indiscriminately after he was kicked out of the bar.
Witnesses told police that the bartender had asked a man to leave after he reached over the bar, grabbed a bottle of liquor and took a drink. He left the bar area with a friend. As they walked down the street, witnesses said, the man who had been kicked out for grabbing the liquor bottle turned, pulled out a handgun and fired two or three shots toward the bar, hitting the victims.
At 1:47 a.m., police responded to a call about shots being fired. Jerrad Grider was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Grider is a junior at UK studying geology.
Grider's mother, Debbie, said last week that her son was "in a lot of pain, but he's going to be OK." She said Monday he was expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday.
She said the bullet went through his back and came out his stomach. A piece of his colon had to be cut out and reattached, she said.
Richardson was shot in the face, Curless said. He said Richardson underwent surgery on Friday at St. Joseph East Hospital and has been released.
Flynn was arrested shortly after the shooting Friday and was charged with fleeing and evading police, resisting arrest and public intoxication. He was taken to the Fayette Detention Center. After further investigation, police added the assault charges.
The person who accompanied Flynn was a juvenile who did not enter the bar but waited outside, Curless said. Charges were not pending against the juvenile, he said.
Flynn was being held at the Fayette County jail on a $17,730 bond.
Fayette District Court records indicate that Flynn has previous misdemeanor convictions for public intoxication, trespassing, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, marijuana possession and disorderly conduct.
