Nov. 03--BRIDGEPORT -- A state trooper from Greenwich was hospitalized Wednesday night after what police say was an ugly crash on Interstate 95 north. Trooper Thomas Ehret, nearing the completion of his first year as at the state police barracks in Bridgeport, was driving northbound near exit 27 around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when police say his cruiser was rear-ended by another vehicle before being struck by a passing tractor trailer.

Ehret was treated and released at Saint Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, state police said.

All but one northbound lane was closed for about two hours while state police, EMS and Bridgeport firefighters assisted Ehret and worked to clear the scene.

"It was a nightmare," state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said Thursday.

The cruiser, a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, was towed back to the state police barracks at Troop G in Bridgeport. The front and back ends of the vehicle were severely damaged, state police said.

The vehicle police say struck the cruiser, driven by 28-year-old Nirmalkumar Sugumar of Bridgeport, also sustained heavy front end damage, state police said. The tractor trailer, driven by 54-year-old Barrington Fyffe of East Hartford, sustained minor damage to its right side and to the rear mudflat of the trailer.

No one was cited for an infraction at the scene, though state police said they are continuing to investigate.
