Oct. 31--COLONIE -- A man who became enraged while working out a Gold's Gym in Latham was killed Monday morning during a struggle with town police.

An officer was called to the Troy-Schenectady Road gym at 6:18 a.m. for a complaint of a man fighting with another patron and damaging gym property, said Lt. Robert Winn.

The irate man hurled items at the first arriving officer and refused to calm down, Winn said. Two other officers and gym patrons helped place the man into custody.

Officers deployed a Taser while attempting to restrain the man, Winn said. The man went into cardiac arrest after he was shocked with the stun gun, Winn said.

The officers and a gym patron began CPR and used a defibrillator before the arrival of emergency medical personnel, Winn said. The victim, whose identity is not being immediately released, was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Two officers suffered minor injuries that did not require medical attention, Winn said.

The gym is located on Troy-Schenectady Road, east of the Latham Circle, in a strip mall near a Kmart store.

A car that police said belonged to the dead man was towed from the site.

The manager of Gold's Gym said he would have no comment. The gym is open for business to a steady stream of customers.

The incident is the second police-related death in Colonie -- voted the safest town in America by CQ Press in 2009 and 2010 -- in four months. In July, 21-year-old Agostino Jubrey was shot and killed by police after he fired at officers in the driveway of his home on Leach Avenue.
