DETROIT --
A Detroit Police officer was shot while riding in an unmarked squad car on Marquette St. and Linwood St. on Detroit's west side.
The officers were in the area looking for a gunman after a shooting victim came into Henry Ford Hospital Thursday night.
According to police, while the officers were in the Marquette St. area, shots were fired at the side of their police car.
The bullet struck the female officer in the back of her bulletproof vest, police said. According to Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee, the officer's body armor is what saved her life.
It's believed the person responsible used a small caliber handgun.
The officer was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and is expected to be okay.
The officer is a mother of two young children, under the age of 10. Her husband is also a police officer.
