LOS ANGELES --
The attorney for the family of Reggie Doucet told Action News that they are suing the city of Los Angeles on charges of civil-rights violations and wrongful death.
Police reports say Doucet, the 25-year-old former North Monterey County High School star athlete shot and killed by Los Angeles police in January, was running around naked after refusing to pay his cab fare and refusing to talk to officers. Then, when officers tried to detain Doucet, he they alleged that he attacked them.
Investigators from the law firm retained by the Doucet family, however, have a different version of the story.
They say Doucet took a cab from a hotel to his apartment. Upon arrival, Doucet wanted to go inside his apartment to get money, but the cab driver wouldn't let him. The lawyers say that Doucet stripped naked as collateral.
Lawyer Jamon Hicks plans to argue that since LAPD officers weren't responding to a violent crime, they were wrong to act as severely as they did.
