A Fayette County man was arrested today after he pepper sprayed three state troopers who had come to his house because he reportedly swung a metal club at an ambulance that was trying to reach a patient on his street.
Christopher Laurence Kelley, 47, of Georges, was arraigned in front of District Judge Rand Scott Abraham on three charges each of aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment. He was also charged with harassment, obstructing emergency services and resisting arrest.
State police said Fairchance EMS workers who had been dispatched to Shady Side Road called police after encountering Mr. Kelley. The workers said that Mr. Kelley was standing in the street as they tried to reach a person in respiratory distress and started swinging a metal club at them. He screamed "turn around" and they took an alternate route.
When police arrived at Mr. Kelley's home, located at 306 Shady Side Road, he answered the door and then turned and ran back into the house when troopers asked for identification. Troopers then retreated and told Mr. Kelley to come out of the home over a public address system.
When he finally came out onto the front porch, troopers attempted to subdue but he was holding pepper spray. When he refused to drop it, he was zapped with a stun gun. He then sprayed three troopers before being taken into custody.
Mr. Kelley is being held at Fayette County Prison on $100,000 bond.
