Responding Pennsylvania Trooper Hurt in Crash

He was en route to a call when his cruiser was involved in a crash.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania State Police trooper was reportedly taken to the hospital Tuesday for treatment of minor injuries after a Chambersburg car crash.

A Chevrolet pickup truck apparently collided with the driver's side door of the trooper's cruiser at Lincoln Way West and Franklin Street. Responders were dispatched at 5:58 p.m., according to Franklin County Emergency Services.

The trooper was traveling west on U.S. 30 with the cruiser's lights and siren activated, and slowed down while traveling through the intersection, according to Cpl. Matthew Maxey, Pennsylvania State Police, Chambersburg.

"In the state of Pennsylvania, a police vehicle can proceed through a red traffic control signal while making use of their audible and visible signals, provided they do so with caution," said state police spokesperson Trooper Tom Pinkerton.

He said motorists are obligated by law to stop at an intersection when there is an immediately approaching emergency vehicle with lights and siren activated. Pinkerton said "failure to yield to an emergency vehicle" represents a summary offense.

Maxey said the trooper was taken by ambulance to Chambersburg Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police would not release the trooper's name, or the name of the other driver, on Tuesday.

The other driver reportedly avoided injury, and the pickup truck sustained minimal damage. The police cruiser was towed from the scene, and responders were seen sweeping up glass in the road.
