INDIANAPOLIS --

The Indiana Attorney General's Office has filed a civil complaint and a restraining order against a former sheriff accused of making questionable purchases in his official capacity.

The AG contends that former Hancock County Sheriff Bud Gray owes more than $42,000. The restraining order covers Gray's bank accounts and pension fund.

The order also reference Brian Ellison, who was one of Gray's deputies. The state is seeking the return of $9,940.82 from Ellison.

A State Board of Accounts audit uncovered the questionable spending, which included travel expenditures and purchases from the department's commissary fund.

"It is extremely disheartening to learn from this audit that two officers are accused of failing to account for the public funds with which they are entrusted as their duties required," Attorney General Greg Zoeller said.

Gray was arrested in August 2010 on an obstruction of justice charge. He remains free on bond.
