Training Tool Named in Indianapolis Officer's Memory

    April 9, 2011
A new high-tech training tool aimed at keeping police safe will also honor the service of an Indianapolis officer who lost his life in the line of duty.

    INDIANAPOLIS --

A new high-tech training tool aimed at keeping police safe will also honor the service of an Indianapolis officer who lost his life in the line of duty.

Kaplan College on Friday dedicated its new firearms training simulator to Officer David Moore, who was shot and later died after a traffic stop in January.

The technology offers 300 different scenarios giving students and area officers a look at virtually every type of situation they might encounter as they face the possibility of using deadly force, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.

Moore's parents, retired Lt. Spencer Moore and Sgt. Joanne Moore, said they hope the training program will help their son's dedication to police work live on through the next generation of officers.

"Joanne and I are extremely honored that this one corner piece and a keystone piece of the training for those officers will carry David's name," Spencer Moore said. "We think it's appropriate David's name be here because he is a good example, a good role model of a police officer."

A plaque bearing David Moores' name will mark the entrance to the training simulator.

"(It means) everything," Joanne Moore said. "It means David didn't die in vain."

Kaplan College offers a two-year program in criminal justice aimed at preparing future police officers.
