SAN ANTONIO --

San Antonio police said an officer was forced to fire her weapon at a suspected car burglar Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Darrell Volz said the female officer was responding to a call around 5 a.m. about a suspicious person in the parking lot of the La Paloma apartments, located in the 100 block of W. Rampart Street.

The officer saw a person running across the lot but temporarily lost sight of him, Volz said.

A short time later, the officer noticed a car driving directly toward her. She used one hand to push off the side of the car and move herself out of harm's way while using the other hand to draw her service weapon, Volz said.

According to police, the officer fired one shot just before the suspect sped off.

Volz said it did not appear that the suspect was hit. Officers found the suspect's vehicle, with obvious front-end damage, about a half block away.

Volz said the suspect ran away and he believed the driver hit a post in the way out, but there were no signs of injury inside the vehicle, which was stolen.

Volz also said there were signs of tampering on other vehicles in the parking lot, leading police to conclude the man was breaking into cars.
