A Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy shot and wounded a man when he pointed a gun at the deputy during a standoff at a home in north Harris County early this morning.
The shooting occurred at the home in the 2500 block of Bycreek near Creeksouth about 2 a.m., according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said the man, whose name has not been released, is in critical condition at Ben Taub General Hospital.
No other injuries were reported.
The deputy, whose name has not bee released, will placed on administrative duty for three days, which is customary, said Christina Garza, a spokeswoman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Garza said the man and his wife and her 2-year-old daughter as well and two other adults were in the home when the man threatened to shoot himself. The man's wife locked herself and her daughter in the bathroom and called 911. She told deputies the man had several guns in the home and he wanted to shoot himself, Garza said.
When deputies arrived at the home, they saw the man outside on the driveway. He was holding a gun.
When he saw the deputies, the man went inside, Garza said. He locked the door and turned off all the lights. At some point, the two adults managed to get out of the house unharmed.
Deputies tried to negotiate with the man for about 40 minutes, Garza said. Then they heard a gunshot inside the house and went into the home. They found the man in the master bedroom. He was holding a rifle and handgun, Garza said.
The deputies told him to drop the guns, but he refused. Then he pointed one of the guns at a deputy, who opened fire, hitting the man, Garza said.
The Sheriff's Office Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office will investigate the case.
