A Paramus police officer is listed in critical condition after being shot several times following a pursuit Sunday night, according to The Record.
Officer Rachel Morgan, 31, was attempting to pull over a driver for speeding and fake plates but the car kept going at a high rate of speed and lost control on the entrance ramp from Route 17 to the Garden State Parkway around 11 p.m.
After the car came to a stop, the driver -- 23-year-old Michael Sean Carmody -- shot the officer with two rounds, hitting her in the stomach. She was shot a total of five times and was wearing a bulletproof vest, which stopped two of the bullets.
Morgan and another officer returned fire, hitting Carmody six times.
The wounded officer was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center and underwent surgery this morning and is listed in critical but stable condition.
"She is a great police officer, a very hardworking dedicated police officer," Paramus Capt. Kevin Smith told the newspaper. "She'll make it through this."
Morgan has been with Paramus for two years and previously worked for the New Jersey Institute of Technology Police Department.
Carmody underwent surgery at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center and also is listed in critical condition. He has an arrest history that includes drug charges, two driving while intoxicated charges and fictitious plates, according to the report.
