LOS LUNAS, N.M. --

New Mexico State Police have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Los Lunas on Tuesday afternoon.

Sgt. Thomas Christian told Action 7 News late Tuesday night that Fred Salas, 48, was the man who opened up fire on Los Lunas police officers when they arrived at a home after a domestic dispute call.

Police said a woman at the home ran to a neighbor's house to escape.

Police say Salas came out of the house with a gun and fired several shots at Sgt. Robert Ferreyra. Officials said Ferreya fired back, wounding Salas.

He was pronounced dead a short time later after paramedics were unable to keep him alive.

"It sounded like pop, pop, pop, pop," said Jose Romero, a neighbor who lives nearby the scene.

Kids at a nearby day care were unharmed, according to police.

Los Lunas police have turned the investigation over to the New Mexico State Police.

"Preliminary investigation into this officer-involved shooting appears to be a justified shooting. With the limited facts available to us at this time, the officer used the appropriate level of deadly force to stop the threat to numerous residents in this residential neighborhood and to the threat to his own safety," Los Lunas Chief Roy Melnick said.
